The Diffusion Of Tinder

Tinder was launched and able to access in October of 2012. Since that time the app has become quite popular with so many people using the app to meet new people. Tinder has diffused since its launch in 2012. In an article called, “What Ignited Tinder’s Explosive Growth?” the author tells how Tinder reached over 10 million users by January 2014. This shows exponential growth from having no users to now over 10 million. What ignited this huge growth and for Tinder to reach over 10 million users is a question many might wonder. Tinder has gained so many users and this is due to a few things. In the same article, “What Ignited Tinder’s Explosive Growth?” Morgan Brown, the author, brings up the main idea that today’s growth engine was a huge part as to why Tinder gained all of it’s attention. In today’s world, word of mouth is one of the biggest contributors to finding out about new products and how they gain their popularity. Friends talk to friends who then talk to other friends, and the process is an ongoing snowball effect that leads to millions of people then discovering information about the product/app. Another part of the growth engine that helped Tinder reach such high expectations is the technology that we now have at our fingertips that can create products with features that were not possible a few years ago. Tinder allows users to meet new people anytime, anywhere with just a click of a button. The app being able to locate people within in a certain radius is something that has never been done before, helping Tinder reach its over 10 million followers.

Tinder is so unique and because of this it has become so successful. Tinder is not only popular in the United States but has said to have widespread use as well. (Brown, n.d.) “By November of 2013, Tinder’s largest international markets were Brazil and the United Kingdom, each of which was growing at around 2% per day and had added over a million users each in the previous two months alone,” (Brown, n.d.) This statistic shows that Tinder is so widespread and is used by people all around the world. As of March 6, 2016 Tinder has said to have been downloaded 100 million times (Smith, 2016). Another stat found showed that 60% of users are outside of North America displaying how widespread Tinder really is.

Above is a picture that depicts Tinder’s growth from its launch until 2015. Based off this graph Tinder reached its critical mass in less than a year as it had already reached 1 million users at this point. (Hackett, 2015) This app took off very fast and was adopted by many people in such a short amount of time. By targeting college kids at first it became a trend that many took over, making it easy to spread to other target audiences as well.

Who is using Tinder, how, and why is a very interesting thought. It started with 18-24 year olds being the main demographic but has changed from the launch date to now. It also began as just a way to meet new people and set up dates, but also has more uses today. In an article, “The Shocking Truth About Tinder; It’s More Than Just A Hook-Up App,” the author talks about how Tinder is usually looked at as an app that is just for hook ups and that’s it. Antonio Borrello, the author, discovered that 60% of women’s profiles actually say they are not looking to hook up but rather to meet new people and make friends. (Borrello, 2016).  Tinder also has branched out to older crowds and is not just involved with the basic 18-24 year old demographic. People off all ages use Tinder as it has progressed over time helping them to meet new people, date around, or just find someone they would like to talk to. Below is a chart that shows the demographic of Tinder users, making it easy to see how widespread the use is.

Tinder has become such a success since its launch date in October of 2012. In less than a year it reached 1 million users and became a phenemon to many. In an article, “Love Me Tinder,” Emily Witt, the author, describes Tinder as “the dating-hookup hybrid that made things simpler, sexier, and particularly lady-friendly. In just fifteen months, it seems to have cracked the code and caught fire.” (Witt, 2014) This app has reached such success in this domain because it presents something new and evolved to people. When first released it spread so quickly because people talked about it and used it constantly helping it reach its millions of users. Swiping right if you want to match and swiping left to pass, what will you choose?
